About Oshawa, Ontario

Oshawa is a city in southern Ontario right on the Lake Ontario shoreline. Lying about 60 kilometres east of Toronto, it is considered to be the eastern anchor of the Greater Toronto Area. It is also the largest city in Durham Region. Since its incorporation in 1850, Oshawa has been one of the most important cities in the region. Historically it was considered an industrial powerhouse, with tanneries and wagon factories that supplied most of the surrounding area. In 1876, Robert McLaughlin Sr moved his carriage works in Oshawa, which eventually grew into General Motors of Canada and brought the city long-lasting prosperity. It is now known as the Automotive Capital of Canada.

Cars are not all there is to Oshawa, though. The city is a regional hub for both education and healthcare, containing Trent University, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, and Lakeridge Health Oshawa, which provides medical services to the surrounding area. It has a population of nearly 150,000, up 5.7 per cent from the 2006 census, and has produced many notable people, including bronze-medalist figure skater Donald Jackson and supermodel Shalom Harlow.

Economy of Oshawa, Ontario

As mentioned before, Oshawa is a hub for automotive manufacturing not only in Ontario but in all of Canada. General Motors of Canada has both their headquarters and their major assembly plants located in the city and employs thousands of people. Despite this, unemployment is higher than average for the area at 7.62 per cent, and median household income is relatively low at just over $60,000. Despite this, prospects for Oshawa are generally considered to be good, particularly since the development by GO Transit and Via Rail of new commuter lines into downtown Toronto, which have spurred the building of a large number of new subdivisions to house the commuters. Many believe that this will continue to fuel economic growth in Oshawa.
