Spring Has Arrived: GetInsuranceQuotes.ca Encourages Cyclists and Motorists to Share the Road

May 2, 2013

TORONTO, ONTARIO, May 2, 2013 -The temperature is rising and cyclists are again out on the streets. GetInsuranceQuotes.ca reminds both cyclists and motorists to share the road responsibly with the following reminders and information.

According to a study conducted by the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario, which examined 129 deaths from cycling from January 1, 2006 to December  31, 2010, it was concluded that cycling deaths are preventable if proper safety precautions are undertaken.

The report provided significant findings including the following:

According to Kay Teschke, a professor in the University of British Columbia's School of Population and Public Health, 90 of 276 cyclists interviewed say streetcar tracks are directly involved in their crashes. In addition, approximately 60 cyclists are killed each year due to collisions with motor vehicles, according to Transport Canada.

With these staggering statistics in mind, GetInsuranceQuotes.ca encourages that it is even more important for both cyclists and motorists to share the road with the following reminders and useful tips.

For cyclists, they should refresh their important handling skills and safety maneuvers from online guides such as the Ontario's Cycling Skills Guide or take a hands-on cycling course from a certified instructor. All cyclists should learn hand signals for turning and stopping. There are no mandated bicycle safety courses, licenses or permits, and no equipment inspections. However learning the appropriate hand signals and doing it "right" adds safety for all.

Perform regular maintenance checks on your bicycle and wear proper safety equipment and bright clothing so you can be seen and heard by motorists, pedestrians and other cyclists. Be sure to ride in a straight line in your designated biking lane and keep reasonable distance from the curb. Remember that you have the same rights and responsibilities as other vehicles on the road; make sure to obey all traffic laws and don't drink and ride. As they say, "The life you save may be your own."

For motorists, they should remind themselves to keep a buffer zone around all sides when driving and exiting the driveway to give sufficient room for cyclists. Be cautious when attempting to pass a cyclist; only pass when there's enough room for both you and the cyclist. Don't honk at cyclists as they may become startled and lose their coordination. Remember to exercise extreme caution and use turn signals when making turns as cyclists may be approaching from behind faster than you expected. Cyclists may be unpredictable so when in doubt, drive with caution and give the right of way to the cyclist. Ultimately, motorists should err on the side of caution and avoid the chances of incurring an accident to keep the roads safe and car insurance costs low.
